You have shortlisted some universities. Their campus, brochure, and admissions counselor are telling you to choose them, but before you sign on the dotted line and pay your fees, check if your university is UGC approved.
Every year, thousands of students throughout India enroll in universities and colleges that are either fake, not UGC-approved, or operating without proper accreditation. The degrees obtained from those institutions are useless for getting government jobs, for doing further education or, in most cases, even for working in private sector businesses.
This guide will provide you with an up-to-date 2026 guide to verifying whether or not your university is UGC approved using official websites, real-world examples and no confusion whatsoever.
What Is UGC Approval and Why Does It Matter?
The Government of India created the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a statutory body in accordance with the UGC Act, 1956. The UGC’s main purpose is to ensure that all colleges and universities maintain high-quality educational standards throughout the nation, as well as provide recognition to institutions of higher learning.
In simple terms, if your university is not on the UGC’s approved list, then all degrees awarded to you by that institution are not valid in the country of India. This has implications related to:
- Government Job Eligibility - Most of the public sector undertakings and government jobs will only consider applications from candidates who have qualifications from UGC recognized universities.

The UGC has identified and is monitoring more than twenty-two colleges throughout all of India that claim to award degrees but are not recognized by the UGC and are conducting operations illegally, many with websites that publicly advertise. Therefore, verifying an institution’s approval by the UGC must be a prerequisite to your admission to a college or university within India; it is non-negotiable.
How to Verify if a University in India is Recognised by the UGC
Step 1: Go to the official UGC website at www.ugc.gov.in
You must visit the official and authentic source of UGC for verification of recognition status, which is the only source for this information. Do not use third-party websites claiming to have this data; many of them are out of date.
Once you arrive at the homepage, look for a section with the title "University" located in the top navigation menu.
Step 2: Click on "University" and then select "List of Universities".
This will take you to a page that includes a search field for filtering through many universities in the database containing over 1100+ to date. The search filters include the following:
- State (Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, etc.)
- University Type (Central, State, Deemed, Private)
- University Name (search using key words).

- Click on "University"
- Scroll to find "List of Fake Universities"

Uttarr Pradesh(4), West Bengal(2).Always confirm, through verification, if your college is listed as a suspect, before registering.
Step 5: For Distance Learning or Online Degrees – Confirm University has UGC-DEB Approval
If you are looking to obtain either a distance learning or online degree, UGC's regular recognition of the university is not sufficient. You must also confirm that the university also holds the government’s Distance Education Bureau (UGC-DEB) approval

A university may be UGC recognised but have poor educational standards; NAAC Grades (A++, A+, A, B++, etc.) will show the overall quality of education provided at that institution and the quality of facilities available to students. Many governmental scholarship/fellowship programs (eg. UGC-NET) and government job opportunities also favour (or mandate) applicants who graduate from NAAC accredited institutions.

4. Incomparable tuition fees as compared to those of other institutions in the current market.
5. Absence of the faculty biography or faculty credentials appear questionable.
6. Aggressive telemarketing campaigns and offers of guaranteed acceptance into professional diplomas/degree programs (such as nursing, law).
7. Degree(s) that do not conform to diplomas typically issued by accredited institutions (i.e. digital locker and QR code verification)
How to Verify Your Existing Degree (For Employed Professionals)
If you already have obtained an academic qualification but would like to confirm its legitimacy, you may do this using the official document management tool called Digital Locker at www.digilocker.gov.in. Many UGC-accredited institutions are now connected to the Digital Locker, allowing authorized agencies such as employers or immigration officials access to your verified credentials.
